Layout - A very general term meaning where you put the elements on a page. Look at the two "page examples" shown at right. The example on the left is a simple, "square" layout, just an image in the upper left and some paragraphs of text. The example on the right has a more diagonal layout, images running from upper left to lower right.
Whitespace - Areas on a page that are empty of text or images. In the layout examples, the square layout looks pretty full, but the diagonal layout on the right has more open space, known as whitespace. Having open areas like this is considered easier on the eye, more inviting to the viewer. So whitespace is desirable in design.
