In any endeavor, to be a success, you must know your strengths and your weaknesses. Know what you have a feeling for, and know what you are uncertain about in designing. You'll meet very few people who can do everything. Most of us have to find some way to balance out our skills, either through working with other people, or through continuing our development with classes and professional organizations (I'm always amazed at what I can get from just eating lunch with a group of designers and talking about projects and clients). But definitely get a feel for what you can and can't do. It will save you from making a commitment to get work done under difficult circumstances, and then find out you really have no idea how to finish the job. If you know you will need help on a project, build that into the time you agree on and the price you ask for. The other reason I am making a point of this is that many employers will ask you what your strengths are. And sometimes they will ask you for your weaknesses... don't ever feel like you have to come up with some weakness to confess, although it doesn't hurt to let them know of some area you are working on and improving. Being able to talk about your strengths is a selling point. Especially if your portfolio of work backs up your views. It shows you know what you are doing. |
